What is Compass Rose® Memory Care?

A compass rose is the part of a map that shows direction. It’s the symbol behind Compass Rose®, Memory Care at Westmont for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. A secure place, staff on hand around the clock, and days shaped around the person you know.

Deciding on a move is hard, and so is everything that comes before it. What we can tell you is where we start. Their work, their music, the people in their photographs. We learn the person first. The care follows from there.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

  • More than care. Tasks get done either way. What matters is the attention and the commitment behind them.
  • Connecting, not correcting. When the details slip, we don’t argue them back into place. The relationship matters more than the correction.
  • Every cue counts. A lot gets said without words. A look, a gesture, a hand pulling away. We’re trained to read all of it.
  • A culture of communication. Between staff, between residents, with you. Nobody should have to guess what’s going on.
  • Shared human needs. To be understood. To be useful. To be treated as an adult. Dementia doesn’t change any of that.

The 7 Domains of Knowing a Person

Before anyone moves in, we sit down with the family and put together an Individual Care Plan and a Life History. Our Lifestyle Director builds the days from there. Seven things we want to know:

The days here have a shape to them. Someone helps with the morning if the morning is hard. Meals are cooked on site and eaten together. There’s room to move and be outdoors, activities that match what a person can still do and still enjoy, and someone nearby at three in the morning if three in the morning is when it gets hard. Family Support & Education

You know how demanding this has been. The long stretch before the decision, the second-guessing during it, and the strange quiet after. It doesn’t end when the boxes are unpacked, and we don’t expect you to hand your parent over and step back. So we keep you in it. Our staff will tell you how the week actually went, not just the parts that sound good.

Compass Rose® also offers education and the chance to sit with other families who are somewhere on the same road, because understanding what’s happening makes the hard days easier to meet. Some of them are further along than you. Some are just starting.

Family, friends, grandchildren, and visiting therapy pets are all welcome here, and the days are better for it. Bring the baby. Bring the dog if we can arrange it. Sit through a meal, or an afternoon, or nothing in particular. Your presence in their life is not a visit to a facility. It’s the point.
